Starwood Weimaraners are located at Echo Hollow, a forty acre gentleman’s farm in Hardwick MA. Gale and Kenan Young, owners of Starwood Kennel registered, have been training, showing, and breeding Weimaraners in Conformation, Obedience and Field Trials since 1973. Gale has been the owner of many National Top Ten Show and Field Trial dogs including a dual Champion who was the top Field Trial dog in the country in 1986. These dogs are excellent companions. Our dogs come from sound breeding stock and have all pertinent health clearances. Gale is also a AKC approved dog show judge.

“The Weimaraner is a medium sized gray dog, with fine aristocratic features. He should present a picture of grace, speed, stamina, alertness, and balance. The temperament should be friendly, fearless, alert, and obedient.” These are direct quotes from the Weimaraner standard which the National Club has developed to describe the breed.

The Weimaraner is a very devoted companion. He is also a German dog with a German disposition. He requires things to do. He loves to be involved in your life, to go places and do things with you. A well trained Weimaraner is a fabulous companion and family dog. A dog which is not trained is unruly and stubborn.

We tell our puppy buyers that they should plan on taking their dog to dog school for almost 2 years. The more you do with the dog the better. Getting involved in some agility or field training with your Weimaraner is a really fun thing as the dogs love to work.

We have 5 Weimaraners, have been breeding for over 40 years and have had Top Ten show dogs and field dogs. Our dogs love to sleep on the couch and even spend some time on the bed before we go to sleep. They go for rides in the car and enjoy going for walks. At night three of them sleep in crates with nice beds in them and 2 get to sleep on the comfortable chairs in the bedroom.

It is important to get them used to nail trimming on a bi-weekly basis from a very young age. We use a “Dremel” which can be purchased at any Home Depot or hardware store. We grind the nails a little bit each week.

The dogs have short coats and are very easy maintenance. The Weimaraner loves to be outside if you are outside. In the winter he will probably need a dog coat. He is not a dog to leave outside as he cannot endure the cold winters. He does not like being kept outside if you are inside. He really likes to be with his owner.

It is important to train your puppy to be in a crate. My 10 week old puppy does come up in bed if we are watching TV but she also sleeps in a crate next to the bed when we go to sleep. She will wake us up if she needs to go to the bathroom at night. Our puppy spends a lot of time with us as we have a home office but she also spends some time alone so she will not suffer from separation anxiety when she is left alone.

The breed is very smart, learns easily, and can be smarter than its owner! That can be a problem for some people.

The Weimaraner is a good dog for someone who wants a real companion.
